The biggest and most popular event during Pride is the annual Heineken Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade, a well attended parade through the Oak Lawn District. Dallas Prideĭallas Pride takes over every September with a month-long celebration of the gay community. For a night out, check out Whitehall Exchange for a refreshing cocktail or Oak Cliff Social Club for a casual night of billards, brews and late-night pizza. Start at Bishop Arts Market for gifts and small home décor pieces before stopping by Veracruz Café for a plate of mixiotes de pollo, a traditional Mexican dish comprised of chicken wrapped in banana leaves and covered in a guajillo and ancho chili sauce. Enjoy the small town feel of the area as you walk through streets of art galleries, restaurants and lively retail shops. The district is home to the second-largest concentration of gay-owned businesses.

The area is home to several events throughout the year with a focus on the LGBT community, including Easter in the Park, a colorful celebration in Lee Park complete with a costume pet parade, and the annual Oak Lawn Halloween Street Party, an energetic block party on Cedar Springs Road that brings bold costumes and hours of mingling, dancing and live entertainment to the neighborhood. Make sure to stop by Cedars Springs Tap House for a beer before hitting up shopping favorites like Flower Reign for unique gifts or Out of the Closet for vintage finds. Sue Ellen's is one the largest lesbian bars in the country – you'll find it right next door to J.R.'s and in close proximity to other popular bars, clubs, restaurants and retail shops in the area. The second floor includes a patio overseeing the busy street below and is a highly sought after spot for Dallas Pride weekend. J.R.'s is a two-story bar with a Cheers feel on the first floor and a more modern atmosphere on the second floor.
